Health food restaurants have struggled to shake the stigma that they’re bland, awful or just plain weird. Soy meat? Cheese made from nuts? Grains as a side? At Café Gratitude they fought these assumptions when they opened their first location in the Mission District of San Francisco—that is, until customers tried the food. The vast majority of dishes on their large, diverse menu may be raw, entirely organic, entirely vegan local fare free of refined sugar, flour or additives yet they’re the same items you’ll find at more mainstream dining establishments. For example, the live deep dish pizza is an onion crust with marinara, pesto, tapenade and cashew ricotta topped with brazil nut parmesan and basil. The raw enchilada is a live spinach tortilla with sprout seed filling topped with spicy mole, cashew sour cream and chipotle coleslaw. Other tasty, original vegan touches include a sautéed maple coconut in place of bacon BLT, buckwheat granola for breakfast and sunflower seed chorizo taco salad. Menu names like “I Am Grateful” and “I Am Dazzling” may be a bit too Hippie for some people, but the food has clearly had an impact–Café Gratitude now has six locations in the Bay Area, one in Santa Cruz and one in Los Angeles. You’ll have to try Café Gratitude to see if their dishes really hold up to the ones they are mimicking: here, tasting is believing.
