Kit Kat Collecting

January 4, 2012

If someone in America told you they have a Kit Kat collection you might think you’d met a new personality disorder. In Japan, however, a Kit Kat collection makes complete sense. That’s because in Japan you can “break me off a piece of that Kit Kat bar” in more than one hundred flavors.  From the ordinary Cookies & Milk, Strawberry Cheesecake, and Tiramisu to the odd Aloe Vera, Soy Sauce, and Sports Drink, the Japanese Kit Kat flavors come wrapped in special packaging (at times with a CD) and are released for only a short amount of time.  Different variations are targeted to different regions of the country, and once they’re taken off the shelves, they’re often never sold again.  In other words, the Kit Kat is a collector’s dream, especially to ex-pats bemused by Japan’s candy bar culture.  Which raises an interesting question–beyond simple marketing strategy, is the Kit Kat symbolic of Japan as a whole?  The Kit Kat may simply represent the country’s diverse tastes, but perhaps it also reflects a hectic, expansive culture that never seems to slow down.  The Kit Kat slogan suggests this is true:  “Have a break.  Have a Kit Kat.”
