Whoa, Brooklyn Really is Cool

December 5, 2011

West Coasters have been hearing a lot about Brooklyn recently: that it is the place to be in NYC for the young, hip and creative; that it is where Hipsterdom began (we always thought it was Silverlake); and that it is actually affordable. But as Californians well know, talk is cheap.  So we decided to investigate Brooklyn Cool ourselves. Here’s some of what we found:

Park Slope

Take a stroll through the surprisingly peaceful Prospect Park to the Brooklyn Museum where you’ll see both classic and modern works of art—beginning with a massive portrait of Napoleon leading his army re-envisioned with a contemporary black man in place of the tiny tyrant. From there, head to Union Hall where you can literally get lost for the rest of the day (and night) in a 5,000 square foot restaurant, bar and live music venue that includes two lively indoor bocce ball courts.

Williamsburg

The neighborhood getting most of the Brooklyn buzz these days has arguably become too popular for its own good. Still, there is a plethora of cool places for clothes shopping like the fantastic vintage store Beacon’s Closet and the well-curated boutique Bird. And duck into the Brooklyn Brewery for an elongated happy hour from six to eleven PM where twenty bucks gets you five beers plus a sixth thrown in for free.

Millwood

Finally, while there are many good restaurants throughout Brooklyn, make sure you get at least one slice of pie from Di Fara Pizza off Avenue J in Midwood or Roberta’s where the ingredients are grown in an organic garden on a warehouse rooftop.

Sam Feeder is a poet/writer/ photographer who works primarily in Los Angeles and Austin. Feeder is a careful observer and tries to experience as many different aspects of life as possible, ranging from travels all over the world to discovering that hole-in-the-wall restaurant or bar no one knows about.
