Jonathan Adler: Redefining Happy Chic

October 19, 2010

Designer extraordinaire Jonathan Adler just debuted his new line of eclectic housewares last week. But you won’t find them in his funky boutiques in New York, San Francisco, or Palm Beach. No, Happy Chic by Jonathan Adler is available exclusively on the Home Shopping Network. “We want to give everyone everything they could ever need to live a glam, chic life,” Adler tells CulturePOP.

artist changing his medium

This isn’t the first time Adler has done something unexpected. This summer, the prolific potter changed his medium when he designed a clothing line for Seven for All Mankind. His collection included six tops and six jeans for both men and women. Susan Kellogg, president of Seven’s contemporary brands coalition, says they were drawn to Adler because he’s clever and fun. “Those are all words that resonated with our team and with our brand,” she explains. “I think he lived up to all of our expectations. The whimsy he’s famous for came to everything he touched.”

home design meets home shopping

Adler brings that same signature whimsy to his HSN line, which introduces three style concepts: “Pop” brings together bright, graphic patterns, lacquer finishes, and iconic animals and tabletop objects. “Natural” is expressed through organic shapes and handcrafted ceramics. “Deluxe” evokes Hollywood glamour through luxurious and polished nickel and platinum finishes.

Here are our three favorite pieces:

what’s next

What’s next for Adler? If Adler’s recent mind-blowing design of the Barbie Malibu Dream House and his recent Jonathan Adler Junior line give any hint of what’s yet to come, this offbeat and irreverent designer will definitely continue to keep us guessing.

Talitha Peters has been an editor for print and online publications for eight years. She is currently finishing her first novel.
